Heavy Metal! Empty Heavy Metal!

Fri Jan 12, 2018 8:14 pm
As most people know, one of my other major musical loves is Heavy Metal.
At the moment this is mostly Symphonic Metal (think fast and with orchestras, usually incorporating fantasy themes).

A great band I'm hugely enjoying at the moment is Turisas. I brought the album this is from last year and it has become one of my favourite albums across all genres.. so quite high praise from me, I guess!
This isn't really symphonic metal.. I guess Folk Metal would be more appropriate... (there seem to be so many off shoots of the genre these days!)

For a slight bit of contrast, here is an unplugged live version. How do you do unplugged metal with no vast orchestras? Damn well it seems, it also shows the skill of the band.. I may even like this as much as the studio version.

Ghost are a band you either like or you don't. I love them, especially their more recent stuff which has some great hooks along with traditional metal elements and, in this instance, a choir for good measure..

Not sure how broad an area Metal covers (as opposed to hard rock, noise rock etc) but I'll post this here. While reading about ex-Purple singer Glenn Hughes and his struggles with drugs with booze, I learned that it was The KLF (of all people) who made him see the light when they enlisted his services on the insane track "America: What Time Is Love?" (1991). Then I discovered that The God Machine, a band a colleague had introduced me to years ago, had covered "WTIL?" as the B-side of "Home" a silver vinyl 7" released in 1993:

KDS/kds at Smiley/PSF alerted us to this band a while back as encapsulating the future of
metal. This was the album in question (it seems one track has been deleted by ol' Tubey):

These were a great band back in the day. I had their 2nd album, "Machine", on CD.

However, the lead singer tragically died back in 2014.

One of the reasons I love heavy metal is because it's one of few genres that still feel fresh consistently.
This one may not be for every body (I find Cookie Monster metal vocals can be a divisive point), but I adore the mix of Classical, Choral and Metal in this track. It shouldn't work, yet it does!

It does indeed. I have no problem with Cookie Monster vocals, here or elsewhere. (I have no problem with Cookies either.) Fleshgod Apocalypse are certainly versatile. This great track has it all.

On a slightly sour note, I see another FA song on YouTube called "Syphilis". "Recommended for you". Well, thank you very much.

This is the heavy metal/hard rock topic at PSF, where they are a number of fans, particularly kds and the captain:

http://beachboys.boards.net/thread/1761/hard-rock-heavy-metal

It's worth linking it now that all our other posts are gone.

Also, Jason (ex-Smiley, now PSF) left this illuminating list at his former home:

This is the music I'm winding down and/or starting the day with these days. Finnish funeral
doom metal band Tyranny take death grunt vocals to a new level, lol. Yes, there are lyrics!

This has been in my head recently.
Pity that metal isn’t that commercial because that’s a hit song chorus if I’ve ever heard one!

A German band, I see. Cool track there, Bob. While holidaying in the
north of the UK, I found this flyer among the brochures at the house:

Go so far north as Richmond? My other half has family in that neck of the woods.. beautiful part of the world!
I still haven't listened to too much of that LP yet.. Maiden have been very hit and miss for a very long time.. in my own humble opinion, of course!!!

Actually the house where I found that flyer was in the wilds of North
Yorkshire. No idea what it was doing in among the holiday brochures!

A Dutch relative was a Maiden fan years ago. I remember this one cool track on one of his LPs:

That's a great, great record!

I know the cabins we stay in (in a small village called Kiplin) often have brochures, menus and other such gubbins tucked away in a drawer.. maybe someone added it.

Rippikoulu was one of the first Finnish death metal bands to growl in its own language. "Kadonneet Jumalat" comes from Musta Seremonia, a demo released on tape in 1993 and now cleaned up for general consumption (well, almost). With grateful thanks to nosliw at Hoffman for the heads up.
