How would you like to take a 3D ride through the Great Nebula in the constellation of Orion?

Good call, DGQ. This link to NASA's "Astronomy Picture of the Day" used to be in my signature, along with old (or rather a youthful) Semprini. All change now, of course----which is why it's here.

How about this lunar eclipse mere hours ago, which climaxed with a so-called super blood wolf moon?

The Horsehead Nebula in Orion is mind-blowingly beautiful:

Yes indeed! Thanks for the heads up. I've been watching a number of videos about it. That same day 50 years later (yesterday) there was a partial lunar eclipse. The Dutch skies actually cleared for a change--most spectacular! Apparently Saturn's in there somewhere above right of the moon--darned if I can see it.

I was 8 1/2 years old so I don`t remember all that much. Probably just a normal day for me, mostly swimming in the afternoon at the local swimming pool. I got to stay up past my bedtime so I could watch the moonwalk. My mother said it was history being made and that`s why I was allowed to stay up. I was really glad of that because I followed the space program pretty closely in those days. I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. Come to think of it, I still want to be an astronaut when I grow up.

I never realized that the Pole Star (aka Polaris) was in fact three stars. With thanks to DarkGothicQueen for the enlightenment.

In 1572, Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe was among those who noticed a new bright object in the constellation Cassiopeia.

How on earth did I miss this? Not paying attention as usual. I remember the event well (having passed the 8 1/2 mark some years previously). We watched it at the house of a great aunt, a geologist, who I remember kept asking "How do we know they are really up there?" DGQ, I'll keep my fingers crossed--on both counts! :*P

What a stunning image! I used to have NASA's "Image of the Day" in my signature at our previous home...
