Heard this gem yesterday on a usually boring Dutch programme where a panel discusses three (as yet unnamed) versions of the same work. I love Elgar--in fact we did an Elgar Walk in Gloucester some years ago after visiting his home (now a museum), where we bought a CD and a tea towel.

The Georgian composer Giya Kancheli died yesterday aged 84. This was the contemplative piece they played on the radio when announcing his death. Written in 1989, Mourned by the Wind is a "liturgy" for viola (or cello) and orchestra. In this performance of the third movement, Yuri Bashmet is the solo violist:

This is for MW, who just sent this to our "Pete" app. It's Balakirev's "The Lark" ("Zhavoronok"), a transcription of No. 10 from Glinka's A Farewell to Saint Petersburg (1864). A fitting conclusion to an amazing holiday!

Today I heard the stunningly attractive Georgian pianist Nino Gvetadze play (on Dutch TV) "Paradise - Birds", the fifth piece in Poems, a work by Cyril Scott, a name I haven't heard in a long while.

Gah!!!! Too much work and too little time to craft decent posts! Two weeks ago in St. Petersburg we attended a performance of Prokofiev's opera Betrothal in a Monastery at the Mariinski Theatre. A dream come true, in a way--that theatre is the home base of our favourite conductor Valery Gergiev.

It seems Sergei distilled a concert suite from it, so rather than post the entire opera, here is that suite, which he deemed fit to entitle Summer Night:

Besides the famous Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes, Erik Satie wrote some quite outlandish stuff. One of the strangest of his compositions is Socrate, for four female voices and small orchestra. It's an example of what I would describe as "white" music, whose notes threaten to fall off the page (not quite sure what I mean by that but still). White or not, it conjures up for me rather scary multi-coloured images reminiscent of Ancient American art. An unsettling work, to be sure. This ancient version is conducted by René Leibowitz, an intriguing figure in 20th-century music:

Bach the father may belong in the Baroque thread but Bach the sons (in this case Carl Philipp Emanuel) are regarded as "Classical" composers (see wiki link). I asked my "music friend" across the road for some advice on what to check out of the sons' music and she suggested C.P.E.'s Cello Concerto in A. The third movement is well known in NL as a TV theme tune--I had no idea it was a cello concerto, as the bit you always heard was for orchestra alone! Still, I dug out the first two movements and here they all are. Lovely stuff.
