Renaissance Music
Mon Jan 08, 2018 11:51 am
Renaissance music is vocal and instrumental music written and performed in Europe during the Renaissance era, stretching from 1400-1600.
Another favourite music genre of mine is Renaissance music. When I film manor houses or palaces for my Medieval Richard channel, I always use Renaissance music to fit.
I'll start with this as it's just splendid.

We attended a stunning performance by the Huelgas Ensemble under Paul van Nevel a while back.
It was of early anonymous English works (complex, ars subtilior-like pieces), none of which are on
YouTube. The following gorgeous sequence ends with a 40-part motet by Alessandro Striggio
(a new name to me) that seems to have been the inspiration for Mr. Tallis's 40-part Spem in alium.

More Josquin and more Huelgas Ensemble, one of the best vocal ensembles in
the world. I heard their rendition of Qui Habitat this morning on Dutch radio. Wow.

More Josquin. Yesterday afternoon we heard some of his motets in a church in Utrecht, part of the Early Music Festival they hold in that city every year. They were sung by Cappella Amsterdam (not on YouTube).
