"Almost nobody dances sober"--H.P. Lovecraft and music
Sun Aug 18, 2019 11:41 am
Last week I found myself pondering this somewhat (to me) forbidding author and his writings. I had read stuff by him years ago which scared the life out of me (so it must have been good) but DarkGothicQueen recently introduced me to illustrations of Lovecraft's creation Cthulhu (see below), a particularly horrific entity that makes Cameron's aliens seem very tame indeed. (I'm sure as this thread progresses and I inevitably start talking crap, DGQ will chime in and set the record straight. )
Let's kick off with this great track by Beastwars, a sludge metal band all the way from Kiwiland. "Cthulhu" is the penultimate track from their self-titled 2011 debut album.

My first encounter with the name H.P. Lovecraft was in late '67 or early '68, when I first came across this self-titled album by a band of that name. (I understand there's another band called just Lovecraft but that's for another time.*) I gave it a try in the record shop listening booth but didn't warm to it. Later I heard a track from side two called "The White Ship", which I loved--and still do. What an atmosphere! Those voices are spooky.
*) I now see this is a second incarnation of the same band, which later changed its name again to Love Craft!

The closer on Metallica's second album, Ride the Lightning, is an instrumental. "The Call of Ktulu [read: Cthulhu]" shows them moving away from the hellbent-for-leather style of Kill 'Em All into more melodic and thoughtful realms.

See below for a wonderful list of Lovecraftian music (one that should keep me busy for while), including this remarkable track by Arzachel. It's difficult to believe that's Steve Hillage on vocals and Dave Stewart (yes, that Dave Stewart) on church organ! See the progarchives link--and particularly the review by NetsNJFan. "Azathoth" begins and ends meekly enough but gets into some weird shit in the middle.
