Covers of Beach Boys songs

on Mon Feb 19, 2018 10:10 am
First off, there's this fantastic website of covers of BB songs:  https://christophercook.me.uk/beachboys/index.php. The section on foreign-language versions is particularly intriguing----there are times when I scour the net looking for additions.

This cover is much more prosaic! This is an early incarnation of Daft Punk doing an instrumental version of the song that gave them their name:

Not a bad cover. Her vocals sound a tad 'off' to me, but the rest is great! Thanks for sharing, Bob!

This one is definitely good, and I admire Ms. MacColl's sincerity and choice of
material, but in my view the original can never be equalled, let alone bettered.

I can't find an audio link for this next "cover"----which may be just as well.

"Where did that landmark go?
Where is the barge I used to know?
How could we lose that great hero?
Oh, concrete barge no

"Who took that ship away?
I remember how we used to say
She'd never die, but that’s not true
Oh, concrete barge you

"Break my heart
I want to go and cry
It’s so sad to watch a sweet thing die
Oh, concrete barge why?

"Could we ever create you again?
Beauty never ending way back then
Could we ever bring her back now she has gone?
Oh, concrete barge no-oooo"

Confused? Well... Canvey Island's famous Concrete Barge was destroyed by vandals in 2003. The album linked below is a celebration of this relic of WWII. For more on the unlikely phenomenon of concrete ships, go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concrete_ship

I'm hoping we can all get over the collective feeling of loss through not being able to hear this Wink

Interesting style choice here, but those fuzzed out guitars surprisingly work!!

I'm coping. Somehow. Now this is quite touching:

Covers is perhaps the wrong word... Noted ex-Smiley poster Freddie French-Pounce did some great send-ups of BB songs. It was his birthday on Friday:

A lady I worked with in the '90s was absolutely potty about Leif Garrett. Back
in the day, there were those who preferred him to John Travolta (not for his
dancing abilities, I should imagine). Sadly, it all went horribly wrong (see link).

Kayla Williams turns in another fantastic BB cover with "Aren't You Glad":

How about this? Co-writer Ray Kennedy and Heavy Friends do "Sail On, Sailor":

"In 1975 [guitarist Mike Bloomfield] he recorded an album with the group KGB. The group's name is an acronym of the initials of singer and songwriter Ray Kennedy, Barry Goldberg and Bloomfield. The band also included Ric Grech and drummer Carmine Appice. Grech and Bloomfield quit shortly after its release. As the record hit stores in 1976, Bloomfield told journalists that the group had been an ill-conceived moneymaking project. The album was not well received by critics, but it did contain the standout track 'Sail On, Sailor'. Its authorship was credited to 'Wilson-Kennedy', and had a bluesy, darker feel, along with Ray Kennedy's original cocaine-related lyrics."

Interesting lyric change. Surprising the BB let them have the rights so easily back in them days?
