Empyrean Reveries: Ambient Trance Melodies & Harmonies

on Fri Jan 19, 2018 10:43 pm
Ambient music has that quality that can send you to other ethereal dimensions, both physical and nonphysical. Concentrate. Mediate. Open your mind to the possibilities of creation and realization. Happy journeys through inner and outer space!

Track: 'Phaedra' (Full album)---Tangerine Dream

I have that magnificent album. It was one of at least a dozen CDs I bought
on the strength of reading Mark Prendergast's book The Ambient Century.

This is the piece that set me off down the minimalist (read: ambient) trail in the mid '70s:

I used to borrow this LP on Branson's Virgin label of Parts 1 and 2 from the local record-lending
library many years ago. Here is the complete Music in Twelve Parts by Philip Glass, the other world-
famous composer of minimal music. I shall be listening to this in due course when my work permits.

That's incredibly ambient for Arvo P. Looking at his wiki page, it was written in 1964 (!) and revised
in 1996. It could have been written yesterday. What a beautiful start to the (online) day.

In 1982 film director Ridley Scott adapted the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick into the movie Bladerunner, which envisioned an Earth dominated by climate change. Futuristic images blend the neon lights of film noir into a modern day cacophony of violence and beauty. The score to the movie is a marvel in itself, composed by Vangelis, that added that extra touch of otherworldly industrialization transitioning the past into the next phase of future visualization. Along this backdrop is a tale of what is humanly possible on the micro-scientific level of genetics, juxtaposed against the question of where is our humanity. Can it be lost in the confusion of artificial perceptions or has it been with us all along, even if the artificial forms we create suddenly have a sentience of their own.

Track: Soundtrack to the movie Bladrunner---Vangelis

Dabbling in a bit of ancient history as I seem to be these days (how did I get there?), I ran into an ambient track entitled Punic Wars from the 2016 album Original Soundtrack by Dallas Acid:
