Brahms and Liszt - Page 6 Empty Re: Brahms and Liszt

on Tue May 14, 2019 10:04 am
This was played directly after the Anoushka Shankar track I linked in the "Full of Eastern Promise" topic. They were both part of the BBC Sunday morning radio feature "Sounds of the Earth", where they broadcast a field recording of birds etc from somewhere around the world followed by some appropriate music. Actually they played only the first of these two miniatures. Two Aquarelles for String Orchestra is an arrangement of the vocal score of Delius's "Two Songs to be sung of a summer night on the water" (1917) made in 1932 by his amanuensis Eric Fenby.

I heard this movement from Dutch composer Joep Franssens' Harmony of the Spheres this morning (before breakfast). It suits my contemplative mood right now.

Very peaceful. I Enjoyed that one.

Saw this Finnish violinist recently playing Sibelius--fantastic! This is his hilarious encore three years ago during the 2106 Proms in the Royal Albert Hall:

Yes, I'm not a chamber music fan but I love this piece. The harp really makes it.

The two Debussy orchestral pieces are other great favourites of mine. And the Mondrian tree picture is hanging in our living room! Wow, and the orchestral stuff keeps coming. Lotsa good stuff! Very Happy

On today's BBC Radio 3's "Sounds of the Earth" feature, they played this brief work by Anatoly Lyadov. Of The Enchanted Lake (Volshebnoye ozero, 1909), which he based on Lake Ilmen in the Novgorod region, Lyadov wrote that it is “purely picturesque, with bountiful stars over the mysteries in the depths! But most importantly it is uninhabited, without entreaties and complaints; only nature—cold, malevolent, but fantastic as a fairy tale.” [Source]

It's Mozart Week on the official Dutch classical radio station. And rather than inundate DGQ's "long Hairs" topic I'll post this here.

I was astonished to learn that the piece I heard on the car radio last night was by Mozart. The stamping passage first heard at 4:05 sounds positively 20th century. Looking at the wiki page (below) I even see that Mozart has the cellos and double basses playing with the wood of the bow!

Mozart Week ended today. There was a Top Fifty (see link below). Astonishingly, his Symphony No. 39 isn't in it! Mind you, Wolfie did write rather a lot of splendid music...

On hearing this brief piece for violin and orchestra on the radio this morning. I knew it had to be by Vaughan Williams--but what was it? It had a whiff of The Lark Ascending about it but there was also a (for want of a better word) barbaric element I couldn't place. Curiouser and curiouser...

It turns out it was from RVW's 1930 ballet Job, A Masque for Dancing. I used to have this on 78s (goodness knows how many, a box full). Scene VII consists of "Elihu's Dance of Youth and Beauty" and "Pavane of the Sons of the Morning". This was the version (under David Lloyd-Jones) that I heard this morning:

"My" choir had this big concert last night (and I do mean big--it went on for ever). I may have already linked some of the pieces they sang but not this breathtakingly beautiful Locus Iste by Paul Mealor, who seems to be something of a superstar among living UK composers (see the wiki page):
