The next new work I heard on Dutch classical radio was this rather splendid tone poem by César Franck. I'd often seen its name but never thought to investigate it--my loss, it would seem.

A relative sang this gem with his choir last night. Vic Nees is a new name to me.

I heard this via Classic FM on the way back from work this evening. It was titled "Joaquin Rodrigo, Milos Karadaglic - Fantasia Para un Gentilhombre (3)".

This was on the radio this afternoon in a newly released version not on YouTube. I read a review that put Janet Baker's 1968 performance with Barbirolli and the LSO at the top of the list. This is Baker with the same orchestra but under Evgeny Svetlanov. Sounds pretty good to me. (I'd like to investigate Ernest Chausson further, particularly his lone symphony.)

And here it is, in a highly recommended version under Marek Janowski:

This is one I caught on Dutch classical radio this afternoon. Lennie B is full of surprises. I used to write him off as a brash American until I discovered the BW connection. Then I listened more closely to things he wrote, like the score of West Side Story (a great favourite of my wife's) and orchestral stuff like the overture to Candide and I haven't looked back. This is quite heavy fare:

This clip advertises a stunning concert by the RIAS Kammerchor that we attended this evening--see links for descriptions of the two requiems featured). (Composer Bernat Vivancos was in the audience.)

I heard on the radio today that the firemen saved the main structure of the building within 30 mins of total devastation!

A friend who sings opera for a hobby asked me to record the accompaniment to a Mozart aria for him. “Se vuol ballare, signor Contino” begins sedately enough--it's the passage marked Presto that worries me. I get the impression he's grossly overrating my pianistic skills. Brahms and Liszt - Page 5 Tongue

The next hurdle is how to record it. I'll probably do it on my smartphone with exciting visuals. Then I can app it to him (all this technology will be the death of me). Brahms and Liszt - Page 5 Unsure

False alarm. My digitally challenged friend got his internet connection back and I found him a suitable accompaniment on YouTube. Just as well, as I couldn't have handled the Presto section without an ambulance standing by. Brahms and Liszt - Page 5 Tongue

I have always been fascinated by architect J.M. Luthmann's concrete "cathedral" at the centre of Radio Kootwijk transmitter park (NL, see separate image). Yesterday I heard an extraordinary choral work dedicated to the radio-telephonic transmission established between Radio Kootwijk and the Dutch East Indies in 1928. Called Mass Transmission, it was written by the polarizing American composer Mason Bates. It was the swooping electronics imitating the fine-tuning of radio signals that first caught my ear. After that I was riveted. (The full text is reproduced here.)

I know I posted something by Bertus van Lier at our old home, very likely this First Symphony. It was hearing a chamber work of his on the radio this morning that reminded me. Van Lier was very prolific, judging from the article linked below:

You're most welcome, Rich. Wink

I heard this movement from Dutch composer Joep Franssens' Harmony of the Spheres this morning (before breakfast). It suits my contemplative mood right now.
