Nature Boy Beyond the Sea--The Many Faces of Bobby Darin
Sat Aug 17, 2019 1:13 pm
I have often wondered if there is another artist with as varied a collection of 45s (many of them big hits) as Bobby Darin. Hence this topic, folks. Be prepared for some truly radical changes of style along the way.
Born Walden Robert Cassotto in 1936, Bobby's first hit was a rock and roll novelty song. "Splish Splash" was covered in the UK by Charlie Drake with success but Darin took it to #3 in the US in 1958.

A kind friend sent me a 45 of Bobby's "Nature Boy" (1961), now one of my prized musical possessions. I remember hearing it at the time of its release. They say it has the hallmarks of a Phil Spector production--those timps, and the strings--but whether it is is anybody's guess. Lovely atmospheric track.

Back to topic, hahaha.
This is a side of Bobby that I used to file under "guilty pleasures". Back in the '60s there was something about swing (and big band stuff) that repelled and attracted me in equal measure. So many years later, I don't give a tinker's toss about what's a guilty pleasure or not. This is great. That's arranger Bobby Scott being instructed to "growl on it" during the instrumental break. According to the uploader, "I Found A New Baby" was recorded on 2 February 1960 in Hollywood.

Back in the early 1960s I used to hear these strange 45s by Bobby D and just shrug and wait for the next record to come on. This is his preposterous take (credited to songwriter Woody Harris) on "Clementine", which amazingly reached #8 in the UK in 1960:
