Out of His Head: The Sound of Phil Spector Empty Out of His Head: The Sound of Phil Spector

The topic is named after a great little book about Uncle Phil by Richard Williams.

Thinking back, the first Spector-produced song I ever heard was probably this one from The Crystals (but see wiki page). "He's A Rebel" reached #1 in the US in late 1962.

Here's another possible candidate for the first Spector-produced song I ever heard. Ray Peterson's original of "Tell Laura I Love Here" was withdrawn in the UK as a tasteless "death song" but the follow-up, "Corinne, Corrina" (as the Brits spelled it) reached the UK top 50 in 1960.

The first Phil 45 my brother or I bought was a genuine Crystals record. "Da Doo Ron Ron" had one of those curious Spector instrumentals on the flip, just to make sure DJs stuck to the A-side. There was little information about these things in those days (1963) so we were floored by just how good The Crystals were on their instruments! Of course we now know that The Wrecking Crew were responsible for the likes of "Git' It":

Brian's obsession with "Be My Baby" is well known. I've never liked it myself. "Baby I Love You" was definitely an improvement to these ears but it was the next three that made them seriously prick up. "(The Best Part Of) Breakin' Up" features the greatest false ending ever committed to wax. Chills-down-the-spinesville! (I'll link the other two later.)

Awesome stuff! Like the groove and instrumentation on that tune.
