This is nice! I'm sure you've linked it before. I have their album Benefactor playing right now. And it's true, you know--never say never.

I'd heard of the name Howard Devoto but never bothered to follow it up. Magazine sound fascinating. I must look out an album of theirs.
I knew of The Jesus and Mary Chain and even have their excellent debut album Psychocandy. But its opener ("Just Like Honey") will now forever be linked in my mind with the final scene of Lost in Translation.
Thank you again, DGQ, for linking all these wonderful tracks.

So your wonderful selection starts and ends with the B-52's. Thank you, DGQ. I doubt whether I can emulate your high standard (and the 1980s are more your era than mine) but I shall do my best.

Mr. K wrote:You may have played a Cure track already, in which case it was probably from later in the decade. From their third album Faith (1981) this is "Primary", with Smith and Gallup both playing bass guitar, giving it a truly menacing sound:

Never liked The Cure. I watched them at Glastonbury recently and thought they were pretty good though.

Department S are just eligible for this topic with their 1980 release "Is Vic There?"

I believe Gary's been on here already. Still, this is the majestic "I Dream Of Wires", my favourite from Telekon (1980), in my view his darkest work.

Changed the title of this thread so classic alternative rock (before the year 2000) from any decade can be posted.

^^^ Lovely track. I know the name but have never checked them out. Thanks, DGQ. :=)
Let's dig out something else special from the 1990s. Tracks 2 and 3 of Spiritualized's 1997 album Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space have such a magical transition that I recommend hearing them both. "Come Together" begins at 3:41 and is followed by "I Think I'm In Love", which ends at 16:30.

That's rather nice. Very eighties! (In the best sense, he added hastily.)

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet. All the way from Montreal, Canada, these are Trans-X and "Living On Video":
