Woke Up This Morning, Got Yourself a Gun: The Music From 'The Sopranos'

on Sat Apr 21, 2018 2:14 pm
I recently purchased on DVD Blu-Ray The Sopranos, a series that ran on HBO for six seasons from 1999-2007. While watching the episodes I noticed a lot of great tracks were used, quite often numerous ones in a single episode and that they were quite varied in the styles and music genres. I`m going to take a different approach then what I do in my TWD topic and not give episode descriptions.

If you are a fan of The Godfather series of three movies, then this series is for you. Era-wise it kind of takes up where the movies left off, taking place in the more recent years. The mob violence is still there and there are many Easter-egg type references to the movies, some more obvious than others. The main character is Tony Soprano (played beautifully by the late James Gandolfini, taken from us way to early, RIP, sir) who is a capo in the New Jersey mafia. He starts seeing a therapist after a series of panic attacks. He has problems with his family, like most people, and he is unable to truly disclose anything about his work, which creates an interesting juxtaposition on how he is able to balance, quite precariously, the events of his life.

I`ll try to post at least three tracks per post and will go in order of the episodes.

Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot

Track #1: 'Woke Up This Morning' (Theme Song)'---Alabama 3

Track #2: 'Sad-Eyed Lady of the Low Life'---Alabama 3

Scene: Opening scene of the episode where Tony Soprano grabs the morning paper and walks up the driveway.

Track #3: 'Little Star'---The Elegants

Scene: The song played on Dick`s car radio when there is a meeting between Tony and fellow capo Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri.

Great idea for a topic, Ms Mod. And this is such a gorgeous track-----one of my favourite doo wop 45s!

Not a big fan of The Boss but Nebraska would be a great album to having playing while driving across that State (or perhaps Kansas).

Interestingly, the lead singer is the classically trained Lynne Nixon, aged 17:
