Bongo Fury----The Beefheart / Zappa Topic

on Tue Mar 27, 2018 1:54 pm
Continuing the strategy of putting two artists or bands in a single topic, this one is dedicated to two
maverick musicians who are similar in some ways and utterly different in others. First off, a fascinating
interview with FZ that I found quite by accident, on the subject of his polarizing movie 200 Motels:

This is arguably the most famous collaboration between these two giants,
with Beefheart guesting on the Zappa guitar showcase, "Willie The Pimp":

This is incredible! Although only one minute and forty seconds long, "Frownland", according to composer Samuel Andreyev, is the most complex track on Trout Mask Replica, for some the greatest pop/rock (double) album ever made. Andreyev then proceeds to analyse it in great detail. Consider this a half-hour well spent, folks:

This is probably my favourite track from Beefheart's 1978 album Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller). "Owed T'Alex" is dedicated to Alex St. Claire, a former Magic Band member:

The only good thing about The Big Lebowski, which we fell asleep to last night, is the music. This Beefheart gem was playing at The Dude's apartment:

This is arguably the first ever BB parody (here at 4:52):

I've always wondered about the provenance of that line in Frank Zappa's song "Montana"--"I'm gonna find me a horse just about this big"--when it occurred to me that perhaps Frank was passing comment on the moment on Tony Palmer's 1967 documentary All My Loving, when he described bringing on stage "a large doll, a girl doll about that tall", but where the camera was still focusing on his head so it was impossible to gauge how big the doll was!

The line in "Montana" is at 4:08 and the one in Palmer's film at 20:47:
